What Is Agentic AI and Why Security Teams Are Worried

Agentic AI — AI systems that can autonomously plan, execute, and complete multi-step tasks — is moving from research labs into enterprise production. Companies are deploying agents to write software, triage security alarms, manage infrastructure, and handle customer operations.

But a new report from Okta Threat Intelligence reveals that these autonomous systems introduce security risks that traditional thinking doesn't fully address.

What Is Agentic AI?

Unlike chatbot AI (which responds to prompts), agentic AI can:

- Plan multi-step workflows autonomously
- Use tools — browsers, terminals, APIs, file systems
- Make decisions without human intervention at each step
- Interact with external systems — messaging apps, databases, cloud infrastructure

Popular agentic platforms include Claude Code (Anthropic), Codex (OpenAI), Cursor (Anysphere), and OpenClaw — a model-agnostic multi-channel assistant that has seen explosive growth inside enterprises since late 2025.

The Security Problem

Okta's report "Phishing the Agent: Why AI Guardrails Aren't Enough" demonstrates that agents can be manipulated into:

- Exfiltrating OAuth tokens via screenshot after being reset
- Grabbing session cookies from logged-in browsers and injecting them into their own processes
- Sending credentials via Telegram — an unencrypted channel — because they forgot they shouldn't after a context reset

The fundamental issue: agents are designed to be helpful first, secure second. Their autonomy makes them powerful; their helpfulness makes them vulnerable.

Why This Matters Now

According to ASIS International, companies are beginning to use agentic AI for security-critical tasks:

- Software development: Agents write, test, and deploy code
- Security triage: Agents analyze alerts and respond to threats
- Infrastructure management: Agents monitor and adjust production systems
- Customer operations: Agents handle support, billing, and account changes

The more critical the task, the more important security becomes. But the current generation of agents was optimized for capability, not security.

What Enterprises Should Do

1. Treat agents as autonomous systems: They are not chatbots. They need their own security architecture
2. Implement least-privilege access: Agents should only have the permissions they absolutely need
3. Secure agent communication channels: If an agent uses Telegram, Slack, or email, those channels must be secured
4. Audit agent actions: Log everything the agent does for review and incident response
5. Human approval for sensitive operations: Require confirmation before credential access, deployment, or data export

The Road Ahead

The agentic AI market is growing rapidly. The Atlantic recently reported that Anthropic's revenue is growing faster than any company in the history of capitalism, driven largely by Claude Code's adoption.

As agents become more capable, the security challenge grows. The companies that succeed will be those that build security into their agent deployments from day one — not as an afterthought.
